New Jersey school district sues over botched call in state semifinal basketball game

The Manasquan Board of Education in New Jersey filed a lawsuit after referees missed a ball that should have sent the Jersey Shore school to the state championship.

Manasquan's Rey Weineimer missed a three-pointer from the wing, but teammate Griffin Linstra was there to grab the rebound and score what the team thought was the winning basket. Manasquan fans went wild while Camden was in disbelief.

However, the referees overturned the decision, resulting in a 46-45 Camden victory. Several videos showed that the shot clearly should have counted, and the referees and the New Jersey State Intercollegiate Athletic Association (NJSIAA) admitted and apologized for the “mistake.”

However, the NJSIAA said in a statement that “the rules are clear” and that the result would not be overturned.

The lawsuit asks for “injunctive relief” and for the state's Group 2 championship game, scheduled for Saturday at Rutgers University, to be suspended.

“We are asking the judge [Mark] “Troncone will stop this game on Saturday pending a judicial review of what happened,” Clark Law Firm told NJ Advance Media. “What we're trying to do is hold the game back pending who the right team should be to be in that game and declare Manasquan the winner. We'll argue that the NJSIAA rules would require them to use the videotape to get the result.” correct”.

“We appreciate the NJSIAA's transparency in admitting the error in calling last night's Group 2 semifinal boys basketball game and appreciate their apology,” the Manasquan school district said in a statement earlier this week. “However, it is truly 'frustrating' that the NJSIAA refuses to exercise its discretion to remedy a situation that was so obvious and well-documented.

“In our unwavering support of our players, coaches and families, the District will continue to pursue every available appeal we can to vindicate the values of fair play and integrity that should be the hallmarks of interscholastic athletics.”
