The Swedish tennis player Mikael Ymer was disqualified this Wednesday from the Lyon Open after crashing his racket against the base of the referee's chair.
The incident occurred after Ymer pleaded with referee Rogerio Santos to check a ball mark on the clay during his round of 16 match against Frenchman Arthur Fils.
Santos said he had seen the ball bounce off the line and therefore would not look for a mark on the court, as referees usually do on clay, although Ymer insisted the ball had gone out.
“I've never seen a referee say, 'I'm not going to go down and check the mark.' It does not happen. Why don't you check the mark I'm giving you? Ymer told Santos.
Fils then broke Ymer's serve on the next point to take a 6-5 lead, after which the world No. 53 slammed his racquet twice into the umpire's chair, breaking the racquet head cleanly off the umpire's chair. mango on his second hit.
A tournament official then told Ymer that he had been disqualified. The 24-year-old came to congratulate Fils, who will face top seed Félix Auger Aliassime in the next round.
A similar incident involving German player Alexander Zverev occurred at the Mexico Open last year.
Zverev received an eight-week suspension and a $25,000 fine for repeatedly hitting the umpire's chair with his racquet during a first-round doubles match.
At the time of the incident, he was expelled from the individual tournament, fined $40,000 and forfeited the $31,570 in prize money he had already accumulated, as well as all ATP Ranking points from the event.
CNN has contacted the ATP Tour regarding Ymer's disqualification from the Lyon Open.
