Manchester United 2-0 Rangers match analysis (July 20, 2024)

New signing Leny Yoro made his first appearance for Manchester United in their 2-0 pre-season win over Rangers on Saturday.

The 18-year-old was named straight into the starting XI just a couple of days after his €62 million ($67.6 million) move from Lille. Jadon Sancho also started for United in his first game for the club since returning from his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.

“For me it was amazing,” he told MUTV after the match. “It was a really good game from the team. I'm happy with my performance and I hope we continue like this.”

Erik ten Hag fielded a number of first-team regulars at Murrayfield, including André Onana, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jonny Evans, Casemiro, Mason Mount and Amad. Antony, Victor Lindelöf and Marcus Rashford all sat out with minor complaints.

Amad gave United the lead in the first half, firing a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

“We have to look at Amad in a different way, of course he is still young, but he is no longer inexperienced,” Ten Hag told MUTV afterwards.

“He had a tough time last season with injuries, but before that he was in the Championship and had a great season. And at the end of last season he had a great time in our first team and played some good games. Now, for this season, this has to be the year.”

Leny Yoro impressed on his Manchester United debut at Murrayfield.

Ten Hag opted to replace all 10 outfield players at half-time and brought on several academy players for the second half. It was one of them, Joe Hugill, who doubled United's lead with a powerful goal in the 70th minute.

It was United's first win of pre-season, following their 1-0 defeat to Rosenberg on Monday.

“I want to win every game, so I was very disappointed on Monday, especially with the performance, which is even more important in pre-season,” added Ten Hag. “You want to grow and that's what we saw today.”

“Compared to Monday, when the level was low, today's game was much better, especially in terms of aggression. We were much more on the offensive and played as a team on both sides, so it was a pleasure to watch.”

Manchester United will next head to the United States to continue their pre-season, and Ten Hag expressed his delight that the club have already made two major signings in Yoro and Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee.

“It's great that we are there, on the front line, we are very proactive, the management is doing a great job at the moment,” he said. “That's how we want to act.”

“We are very ambitious at United and we have to be prepared for the season. The sooner you bring your players in, the more you can work on your team.”
