Liverpool 3-0 Bournemouth match analysis (September 21, 2024)

A quickfire double from Luis Diaz set Liverpool on course for a thumping 3-0 Premier League home win over Bournemouth on Saturday, while Arne Slot's side bounced back from last week's shock 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Diaz was electric in the first half, covering up Liverpool's defensive weaknesses with a brilliant display of attacking left-wing dominance over the visitors, with the game all but decided at half-time.

Liverpool had VAR to thank for ruling out an early Bournemouth goal in favour of Antoine Semenyo for offside, and the groans of the home fans, who had feared another shock defeat, turned to cries of joy when the goal was ruled out.

The electric Díaz then went to work, forcing goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga into a fine save in the eighth minute, and threatened several more times before finally beating Kepa to a long pass and scoring in the 26th minute.

Less than three minutes later, Diaz scored his second as Bournemouth were annihilated by a five-on-four counterattack; the Colombian striker used his left foot to slot the ball through the legs of the advancing Kepa for his fifth goal in five league games.

Darwin Núñez then added a brilliant third goal, attacking down the right and slowing before suddenly accelerating again to cut inside and finish with his left foot to make it 3-0.

With the game out of reach for the visitors, there was little to write home about in the second half other than Liverpool's Federico Chiesa making his Premier League debut as a substitute and providing a glimpse of the talent that led them to pay Juventus £10 million ($13.32 million) for him.

Despite their attacking dominance, Liverpool still looked vulnerable defensively at times and goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher had to hold on tight to the ball after it hit the bar following a late corner, but Bournemouth could not find a way back into the game and the hosts won easily.
