The Norwegian top flight match between Rosenborg BK and Lillestrom was abandoned on Sunday after fans showed their discontent with the video assistant referee (VAR) by throwing fish cakes onto the pitch.
The protests began from the opening whistle and after two minutes of bombardment with fish cakes, the referee stopped the match and sent the players to the dressing room.
The match was resumed but protests intensified and tennis balls and smoke bombs were thrown onto the pitch. The referee abandoned the match after around half an hour with the score at 0-0.
VAR has sparked controversy in Norway's Eliteserien, with supporters' unions at several clubs claiming that the time referees spend making decisions using the system ruins matches.
It has also come under criticism from other leagues, with Sweden's top leagues deciding in April not to implement VAR due to opposition from clubs.
