Fiorentina want American Weston McKennie from Juventus, sources say

Fiorentina are interested in signing American midfielder Weston McKennie from Juventus, a source told ESPN.

McKennie, 25, was left out of Juventus' squad for the pre-season friendly against Brest on 3 August alongside Wojciech Szczesny and Federico Chiesa.

New Juventus coach Thiago Motta said after the match that the trio were available for transfer.

“Chiesa and the other players who are not called up for today's match are not part of the project,” he said. “We have been clear with them: they have to find a new solution and a new club as soon as possible. The decision has been made.”

Juventus have since played another pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid and those three players were again left out.

McKennie was linked with Aston Villa earlier in the transfer window, while Everton have also shown interest in the midfielder. There is also interest in him from the Bundesliga and MLS, but it is Fiorentina who appear to be the favourite option at the moment, a source told ESPN.

Fiorentina are interested in signing McKennie on a permanent basis, a source has confirmed, but the deal is dependent on Fiorentina completing other signings. One of the signings that could be key in such a deal is Nico Gonzalez, who moved from Fiorentina to Juventus.

Raffaele Palladino's side have been busy in this transfer window, signing defender Marin Pongracic, forward Moise Kean, midfielder Amir Richardson and goalkeeper David de Gea.

McKennie started all three of the USMNT's Copa America group stage matches and had appeared in 34 Serie A matches for Juventus last season.
