Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that he will continue to play for Portugal following the team's painful exit from Euro 2024.
Ronaldo started all five of Portugal's matches at the tournament in Germany, averaging 97 minutes per game.
However, for the first time in his career, the Al Nassr striker failed to score from open play in a major international tournament.
Portugal's captain broke his silence on social media following Friday's 5-3 quarter-final penalty shoot-out defeat to France: “We wanted more. We deserve more. For us. For each of you. For Portugal.
“We are grateful for everything that has been given to us and for all that we have achieved so far. On and off the court, I am confident that this legacy will be honored and continue to be built. Together.”
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said after his team's elimination that it was “too early” to say whether Ronaldo had played his last game for his country.
Ronaldo has scored 130 goals in 212 appearances for Portugal since making his national team debut in 2003 and winning Euro 2016. He has already indicated that his record sixth European Championship would be his last.
It remains to be seen whether the five-time Ballon d'Or winner will continue to play until the 2026 World Cup at the age of 41.
Portugal will be back in action on 5 September when they face Croatia in their opening UEFA Nations League Group A match.
