Cavan Sullivan, a 14-year-old MLS phenom, becomes the youngest player to debut in North American professional sports

Cavan Sullivan, just 14 years old, not only made MLS history when he came on as a substitute for the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night against the New England Revolution.

He made history in American professional sports.

At 14 years and 293 days, Sullivan became the youngest player to debut in any major North American professional sports league when he stepped onto the field for Union's senior team on Tuesday.

This incredible achievement, as the announcer said during the Apple TV broadcast, was not just about selling tickets. Sullivan has long been a huge prospect in soccer, having signed the largest contract for a homegrown player in MLS history on May 9.

Under that deal, Sullivan will transfer to the English Premier League, one of the top leagues in the world, to Manchester City after turning 18.

In MLS, Sullivan broke Freddy Adu's record by just a few days when he made his debut for DC United against the San Jose Earthquakes on April 3, 2004, at age 14 years, 306 days.

However, Adu remains the youngest player to ever step onto the field for the U.S. men's national team at 16 years and 234 days. Some believe Sullivan has a chance to break that record as well.

The Union demolished the Revolution on Wednesday night, and while a Sullivan was on the scoresheet late in the game, Cavan wasn't the first name.

His older brother, Quinn, is also a star for the Union and scored in the 84th minute. The younger Sullivan didn't get many opportunities to score that first goal or assist in the game, although he did get a shot on goal near the end of the second half.

Sullivan has spoken publicly in the past, mentioning his focus on his individual trajectory at the time of his signing.

“I think it would be cool to have my first record, but I don't care if I beat it or not,” he told ESPN. “I mean, everyone has their own path. It's not where you start, it's where you end up.”

Sullivan added that signing with the Union was always the starting point because it is his hometown team and playing with his older brother is also an easy choice.

“I've always been inspired by playing in front of this culture, and these fans are special,” he said at the time of his signing.

Adding Manchester City to his contract sealed the deal for Sullivan, and now he begins that journey towards what many hope will be a fantastic footballing career.
