Brazilian footballer Dani Alves is being investigated for an alleged sexual assault that occurred in Barcelona last month, the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia confirmed this Tuesday.
“The Investigative Court number 15 of Barcelona has opened proceedings for an alleged crime of sexual assault following a complaint filed by a woman against a footballer for events that supposedly occurred in a nightclub in Barcelona last December,” it reads. in the court statement.
“The matter is under investigation and at this time we have no further information.”
A court spokesperson confirmed to CNN that the accusations refer to Dani Alves.
CNN contacted Mexico's UNAM, Alves' current club, for comment from the team and the player, but did not immediately receive a response. Alves denies any wrongdoing, according to Reuters.
Alves is one of the most decorated footballers of his generation, having won national titles in Spain, Italy and France. He also won three Champions League titles with Barcelona.
Alves won the Copa América with Brazil in 2007 and 2019. At 39, he became Brazil's oldest player to participate in a World Cup while playing for the Qatar national team when his team played Cameroon.
