Bengals' Ja'Marr Chase fined $31,599 for swearing at referee against Chiefs

Ja'Marr Chase's unsportsmanlike conduct penalty has now caused him financial damages.

The Cincinnati Bengals' star receiver was fined $31,599 on Saturday for his emotional outburst toward a referee during the team's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

The Bengals were at the Chiefs' 34-yard line when Joe Burrow found Chase for a 4-yard completion.

As Chase stood up to address the huddle, he gave referee Alex Kemp a dressing down for the tackle by Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie.

Chase was dragged back into the huddle and Burrow shoved the star receiver away from Kemp after the foul. It stopped any momentum the Bengals were building at the time and led to an Evan McPherson field goal.

The Chiefs eventually won, 26-25.

Kemp said officials told Chase they did not believe McDuffie's tackle was a hip drop violation, which would have resulted in a penalty.

“It's pretty clear,” Kemp said of the reason for Chase's penalty. “It's just abusive language towards a match official. That's all. And there was really no interpretation. I'm not going to repeat to you what he said, but there was no interpretation with the language he used. It was just abusive language.”

“The answer is simple: profanity used by grown men rather than direct and personal abusive language towards a match official,” Kemp added. “That's the line. When that line is crossed, we simply cannot allow that to happen in professional football.”

The NFL said Chase committed “verbal abuse toward an official.”

It was a tough loss for Cincinnati, which is 0-2 after missing the playoffs last year in large part because of Burrow's season-ending injury.
