2024 Olympics: Spain and Brazil in verbal war after semi-final

Spain striker Jenni Hermoso said Brazil “doesn't play football” amid a war of words between the two teams' players following Tuesday's semi-final.

Brazil stunned world champion Spain 4-2 and will face the United States in the gold medal match in Paris on Saturday.

“We conceded four goals from a team that, in my opinion, doesn't play football,” said a frustrated Hermoso after the match.

Although Hermoso admitted that his team “did not play well,” he added: “They [Brazil] They study us, they know how to hurt us, play behind our backs. For me, that's not football.

“I don't like that kind of football. Obviously, they gain minutes, they make you lose time and for them it was worth it. They are in the final and we are going for bronze.”

Before the match, Spain's Aitana Bonmatí had spoken of her surprise at Brazil's defensive attitude in their previous match in the tournament, which Spain won 2-0.

Brazilian star Kerolin was unimpressed by the comments made by Ballon d'Or winner Bonmatí and said after Tuesday's match: “She [Bonmatí] I was a little unhappy before the match, saying that Brazil plays badly, slowing down the game a lot.

“It doesn't matter, we did our part, keeping our feet on the ground, listening to what our rivals say, that only motivates us to do something different. Let's celebrate the medal that is coming. We want the gold.”
