To the editor: It would understandably be disconcerting to many if Latinos switched from voting for Democrats to voting for former President Trump, given his overt racism and empty claims to be a champion of the middle class. (“Iowa offers clues on how Latinos will vote in 2024,” January 19)
But history offers other examples of political behavior that, in retrospect, seem strange.
Many Italian Jews, mostly middle class, were ardent supporters of Benito Mussolini during his rise in the 1920s and 1930s. They saw him as the strong alternative to communism. But when he enacted racist laws against Jews in 1938, they realized his mistake.
By then it was too late.

To the editor: It seems inconceivable that any Latino would vote for a white supremacist who called immigrants from Mexico “rapists” and said he will begin a mass deportation program if re-elected.
Wake up friends, unless you want La Migra to knock on your door in the middle of the night and destroy your life forever.

To the editor: I was flabbergasted by the contradictory and misinformed statements highlighted by some of the people in this article.
For example, Ismael Cárdenas says this: “What Trump says is what Trump does. If he promises something, he will fulfill it.”
Hey? Didn't Trump promise a border wall paid for by Mexico?
Lorena López says, “Latinos have a long memory” and are upset by former President Obama's unfulfilled goals on immigration.
What's wrong with your short-term memory? Did they forget how Trump characterized Mexican immigrants as rapists and criminals?
These people are voting against their own interests by supporting the Republican MAGA agenda.
