OpenAI's first AI data center in Europe

Norway will organize the first OpenAI IA data center in Europe, a key development under the company's Stargate project, whose objective is to build the necessary infrastructure for the generative AI. The Stargate Norway initiative, which involves collaborations with companies such as Oracle and Softbank, will reinforce the computer capabilities of Europe.

“Stargate Norway will help provide the computation power to boost the next wave of advances in AI and economic progress for Europe, in Europe,” said the CEO of Openai, Sam Altman, in a press release.

What will Operai build in Norway?

The company plans to build a data center that has 100,000 NVIDIA GPU by the end of 2026. It will launch 230MW capacity to start, with the possibility of expanding up to 290MW. The project is a joint business between NSCALE, an AI infrastructure provider based in Norway, and Aker, a Norwegian industrial investment company. The property will be divided by 50% between Aker and 50% between NSCALE.

“The sovereign, scalable and sustainable infrastructure is now essential to remain competitive,” said the CEO of Nscale Josh Payne. “We are proud to associate with Aker, based on the extensive experience of the team and an impressive history, to offer a new generation of economic growth and AI productivity in Europe.”

The installation will be located in Kvandal, an village outside the city of Narvik in the north of the country.

“With Stargate Norway, we are creating new jobs, activities and long -term opportunities in Narvik and the region,” said Øvind Eriksen, president and CEO of Aker.

Renewable energy driven

OpenAI will be an offtaker, which is an entity that buys renewable energy, in a country where 98% of the energy network comes from renewable energy. The Stargate installation will be fully executed in renewable energy, Openai said.

The chips at work in the data center will remain cold due to the cooling of closed and direct circuit fluid to chip. Excess heat will deviate to low carbon companies, according to Openai.

“The launch of Stargate Norway marks a new chapter in AI infrastructure in Europe,” said the CEO of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, in an advertisement video. “We are entering a new industrial era. Like electricity and the Internet, they became fundamental for modern life, AI will become an essential infrastructure.”

Norway added to the Openai initiative for countries

The Stargate project aligns with the Operai initiative for country, whose objective is to provide localized instances of the “democratic”. As part of the aspect of the program community, OpenAi proposed that it will prioritize access to new Norwegian companies and scientific researchers. If the demand does not coincide with the capacity of the data center, they will be made available to users in the United Kingdom in the United Kingdom, Nordics and Northern Europe.

The company is also exploring collaborations with the Norwegian government to increase the adoption of AI and support the sovereign objectives of Norway.

Global Stargate footprint

The first data center built under the Stargate project is under construction in Abilene, Texas. As of May, some financial conversations faced uncertainty as global tensions changed.

Operai has also launched initiatives related to Stargate in the United Arab Emirates and formed associations with the United Kingdom and Estonia.

The Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, continues to hunt Operai engineers and says Ai superintelligent It's almost ready.
