LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: The president is 'inventing emergencies' to take care of the local police

To the editor: During his two presidential campaigns, Donald Trump would say scandalous things to force the media to talk about him and generate visibility for himself in the news cycle (“Trump expands the military tactics of sending the National Guard to Washington, DC”, August 11). As president, the same is doing: invent emergencies where there are no. Send the National Guard and the Marines to Los Angeles and now their attacks on Washington, DC, are clear examples. And he will not stop there. The real question for the media is to determine what you are trying to hide the news cycle and focus on that.

Domenico Maceri, San Luis Bishop

To the editor: I think that this last movement is a well thought out of Trump's plan to normalize the presence of federal troops and the police in the streets of America so that when he uses the Armed Forces to support his unconstitutional attempt to remain in office in 2028, the population will have already been invested.

Noel Johnson, Glendale

To the editor: We should stop talking about whether DC crime has increased or decreased. Crime is not the reason for Trump's move. It is just another false emergency designed to authorize arrests for National Guard troops and FBI agents in the streets of the capital of the nation.

Marcia Goldstein, Laguna Woods

To the editor: Another hypocritical movement of the Republican President. While his people were destroying the Capitol and threatened to kill the then talkative Nancy Pelosi and then vice president Mike Pence, Trump said he did not have the authority to call the National Guard to restore peace in DC now, in response to the normal crime in DC, he says he has the authority.

Shirley Conley, Gardena

To the editor: What is surprising about Trump that does not need permission from any other authority to roll the guard is that there was no legal, administrative or bureaucratic impediment for him to call the National Guard on January 6, 2021, when the insurrectionists assaulted the Capitol. All I had to do was lift the phone.

Bob Walter, Sierra Madre

To the editor: Is it legal? Yes, in DC, is there any problem with the “thirst for blood” in cities? No. But that is another discussion of a thin argument to insert federal troops into urban areas. What is the true motivation? When there may be) another invasion of the Capitol in January 2029, you have no doubt who will be in charge of keeping the entire DC police and the entire Federal Police.
