LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: The new and stealthy cars of the California road patrol are “very necessary”

To the editor: The new cars of the California road patrol are not very necessary and, hopefully, the respectful people of the law that are sick and tired of avoiding sprinters, rear tours and drivers attached to their cell phones (“The new SUV steppes of CHP come after the reckless drivers of California.” August 20). Since many of the vehicles on the road are SUV, the new patrols (also SUV) will easily mix with traffic flow.

The 100 new Dodge Durangos placed on the roads three months ago will escape an easy detection without police lights, sirens or emblems. I can imagine a boy of about 30 years with a chip on the shoulder that accelerates in the quick lane of the highway that goes to 95 mph, looking in the rearview mirror to find a simple -looking SUV and thinking for himself: “It's okay, this guy wants to compete.” And the next moment, intermittent red lights and a siren.

I see an inconvenience in this scenario that is, without visible lights and police emblems in the cars, the deterrence can suffer, but hopefully not to the point that the program is not a success.
