Do Americans accept that schoolchildren are shot to death?

To the editor: In 2015, a British journalist said the following: “In retrospect, Sandy Hook marked the end of the gun control debate in the United States. “Once America decided that killing children was bearable, it was over.” (“17-year-old kills sixth-grader, wounds five others in Iowa school shooting,” Jan. 4)

Obviously, we don’t all think that the usual shooting deaths of schoolchildren are okay, but many of the people we elect seem to think they are, and that’s all that matters.

We need to use our November votes to change this debate, or we won’t stand a chance. Please vote to end the madness.

To the editor: Now Iowa has joined the growing list of states where children have been shot and killed while attending school.

I can already tell you how the next few days will unfold: there will be thoughts and prayers, grieving parents, calls to action, and, in the end, inaction.

Shameful.

To the editor: I wish journalists would stop calling killers “shooters.”

How many would-be copycat killers are excited by the prospect of publicity and the glamor of being a cowboy “shooter”? Would they be so excited about being a “murderer” or a “mass murderer”?

Why is the media “kind” to these bloodthirsty criminals? Please stop this.
