“Blessed are the rich who boast”: is that in Trump's Bible?

To the editor: Perhaps Oklahoma's search criteria for school Bibles, which it modified to include Bibles other than those sold by Donald Trump, should have been even more brazen. It could have required that the selected edition reflect the former president's moral teachings:

Take the name of the Lord in vain and blaspheme before the innocent.

Disparaging the meek and the disabled.

Blessed are the boastful rich who inherit their wealth and deceive their workers.

Collect money for the Lord's works of charity, but put it in your own pocket.

Do not serve your country, as sacrifice is for fools.

You will not welcome strangers, as they are rapists, thieves, and murderers who eat family pets.

Honor tyrants and abandon those who seek freedom.

Do not speak the truth, because it will expose your sins.

To the editor: Many would maintain that an 18th century observation remains true today: “Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.”

However, as a member of the baby boom generation, I have seen an emerging alternative for scoundrels seeking refuge: namely, selfish professions of firm Christian religious commitment.

And now, the shameless and pious promotion of the “Trump Bible” package reflects how contemporary scoundrels have stooped even further, as they seek refuge by conflating patriotism with religion.

Such diabolical tactics pose a truly biblical threat to the viability of our democracy.
