A gas pipeline would benefit most California drivers

to the editor: Should California get its first gas pipeline (“California could have its first gas pipeline. Would that reduce gas prices?” November 26)? I think the answer is yes.

A pipeline could link California to refineries along the Gulf Coast, where there is excess refining capacity. Gas prices in California have come under pressure due to limited refining capacity and increased costs when there is a disruption in refining. Access to Gulf Coast refining should reduce the cost of gas at the California pump.

I understand that it is desirable to use electric vehicles to reduce pollution. However, the current percentage of electric vehicles on the roads is only between 4% and 5%. This figure will increase, but somewhat slowly now that subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles have been cut. In the meantime, most drivers here should buy gas and do so at reasonable prices.
