Will Rogers's great grandchildren tells the truth behind Hollywood's career, Cowboy Dreams

At the time of his death, the star of the 30s, Will Rogers, was the best paid actor in Hollywood, but all he really wanted was to be a cowboy, according to his great -grandchildren, Jennifer Rogers -cheverry.

“I don't think his passion was to be a movie star,” Rogers said. “His passion was out with people.”

Rogers was the best paid actor who had made more than 70 films when he died in a plane crash in 1935 at age 55. But he was also the author and columnist of newspapers with more than 40 million readers per day, and wrote six books.

“I don't know when man slept,” Rogers-Echetchverry joked. “But he alone, wanted to see everything. He wanted to go, and make the movies pay the invoices.”

Despite being friendly with celebrities such as Clark Gable and Walt Disney and Hobnobbing with Presidents and Kings and Queens, Rogers –cheverry says he was a “common man.”

“And he never forgot where he came in Oklahoma,” he said. “He never forgot to be a cowboy. That's all he always wanted to be was a cowboy. And I think he simply attached to his roots. And going from being a cowboy in a ranch in Oologoh, Oklahoma, to the box office star No. 1 … in Hollywood and alone, he never received that attitude or that arrogance.”

She said her grandfather always told her that when Rogers returned to her ranch, “he was Dad, it wasn't Will Rogers. And he simply closed it and was a father. He was a good and good boy.”

“And he only led from there,” Rogers said. ” “And then he was finally hired in the cinema and moved to California.”

“At the time of his death, he was not only the most famous person in the United States, he was really the most famous man in the world. Everyone knew who he was, and he had visited all countries. He was the unofficial humanitarian of the United States.”

When he got involved in the family business, keeping Rogers's memory alive, Rogers –cheverry said the elderly told him that they remembered being children when Rogers died.

“And they told me: 'That is the only time I have seen my dad or my mother cry.' They were devastated.

While he was an “common man,” Rogers frequently entertained celebrities in his California ranch.

The widow of Rogers, Betty, donated her ranch and land to the state in 1944, and became Will Rogers State Historic Park, which still attracts celebrities until today, Rogers -cheverry said.

She said she assumed the role of Rogers family representative years ago.

“I want to keep his legacy alive. I have two children and two grandchildren, and if it weren't for me, they would have no idea who Rogers is,” he said.

“You know, in Oklahoma it is a little easier. He is Oklahoma's favorite son, and there is nothing here to call after him. But you leave the state, he is a bit more challenging.”
