During a graduation ceremony held at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on Thursday night, violence broke out both inside and outside the concert hall, and a shooting may have occurred.
The Los Angeles County Probation Department said in a statement Thursday night that it had co-hosted a graduation ceremony that night for 100 high school students, including 29 detained youth.
At the end of the ceremony, a community member jumped from a second-floor balcony and assaulted a graduate. All of the detained youth had already left the auditorium and were in a secure detention area.
“The Parole Enforcement Special Operations unit responded quickly, containing the incident and restoring order within the auditorium,” the statement said.
Outside, however, a fight broke out. Four people were detained pending further investigation, the Probation Department said.
Los Angeles police officers responding after reports of violence found evidence of a shooting near the concert venue, although officers did not locate anyone injured.
Police responded to the 100 block of Grand Avenue shortly after 6 p.m. after reports of a group fight and a possible shooting, said Los Angeles Police Officer Kevin Terzes.
Officers recovered bullet casings in the area, he said, but found no victims. Terzes did not know where exactly the shell casings were found.
Grand Avenue and Hope Street were closed between 1st and 2nd streets Thursday night due to the investigation.
The Probation Department did not explain what may have led to the assault inside or the fight outside.
