Two men were found dead Sunday morning in a “human-excavated” hillside cave in Northridge, authorities said.
The hollow space was approximately 2 or 3 feet high. No foul play is suspected in the men's deaths at this time, LAPD spokesman Tony Im said.
An unknown white powder was found near the bodies, prompting the Los Angeles Fire Department to call in a hazmat team. An urban search and rescue team was also called to the site to determine if the slope where the cave was excavated needed shoring. It was not so.
The makeshift cave is located near a homeless encampment.
No further information was available at this time.
