The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said on Friday that it plans to reduce its workforce by 23% and close its research and development office.
The loss of more than 3,000 employees occurs after layoffs and incentives to leave the agency in the midst of the broad effort of the Trump administration to rationalize the federal government.
“According to President Trump's leadership, the EPA has closely analyzed our operations to ensure that the agency is better equipped than ever to meet our main mission to protect human health and the environment while driving the great American return,” said EPA administrator Lee Zeldin.

As part of the restructuring, the EPA said it plans to open a new office of environmental solutions and applied science to replace the Office of Research and Development, saying that the new office would allow it to focus on the investigation “more than ever.”
This occurs a week after the Supreme Court issued a ruling that clarified the way for the administration to make mass dismissals.
Justin Chen, president of the Government Employee Council of the Government Federation, 238, which represents thousands of EPA employees, described the EPA's Research and Development Office of the EPA “.
