The story of Deromero finally collapsed after multiple rounds of interviews with the researchers. The authorities determined that theft of cars was nothing more than a hoax with a quick cash target through insurance fraud, Sheriff's officials said.
Deromero and her boyfriend Alfredo Ledezma, 57, of wood, were accused on Friday of a serious crime of insurance fraud and a minor crime to present a false police report, according to judicial records.
“What began as a serious and worrying report of a violent car theft quickly unraveled under careful investigation,” said the wood county sheriff, Tyson Pogue, in a statement. “Trying to exploit emergency services for personal benefit is not only illegal, but deviates the resources of those who really need help.”
Sheriff's officials of wood county did not return phone calls of the times in search of additional comments. Deromero and Ledezma could not be contacted immediately to comment. It is not clear if they have lawyers.
Both must return to court on July 8 for position reading audiences.
