The search for Hannah Kobayashi finally ends after a month of tragedy and uncertainty


The month-long search for Hannah Kobayashi ended this week after her family said she was found safe.

The announcement comes after the Los Angeles Police Department said it tracked the Maui woman to Mexico and that she appeared to be safe, with no signs of foul play.

Here's a timeline of what we know.

November 8

  • Kobayashi lands at Los Angeles International Airport from Maui and misses her connecting flight to New York City, according to her family. Los Angeles police said Kobayashi intentionally missed this flight, which his family disputed.
  • The family members receive cryptic text messages from Kobayashi, suggesting that someone is trying to steal their money and identity.
  • Kobayashi spends the night in Los Angeles and is seen the next day at the Taschen bookstore near the Grove shopping center.

November 10

  • Kobayashi is seen on video attending the LeBron XXII Trial Experience near Grove and returning to LAX, according to his family's statement. Kobayashi also posts a black and white photo on Instagram about the event.

November 11

  • Kobayashi is seen talking to a ticket agent at LAX; He then boards the LAX Metro C line at the Aviation/Century station near LAX around 9 p.m., his family says.
  • She transfers at the Willowbrook/Rosa Parks station in South Los Angeles and is seen on video leaving the Pico station near downtown with an unknown person.

November 12

  • Kobayashi is seen again on video at the Greyhound bus terminal at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles around 6:30 a.m., according to her family.
  • Just a few hours later, according to police, Kobayashi enters Mexico through the San Ysidro border crossing. LAPD officials said they reviewed U.S. Border Patrol surveillance video on Dec. 2.

November 24

  • Authorities discover the body of Kobayashi's father, Ryan, near LAX. He had flown to Los Angeles to help search for his daughter. Authorities ruled his death an apparent suicide. Family members released a statement saying: “After tirelessly searching throughout Los Angeles for 13 days, Hannah's father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically took his own life. “This loss has greatly aggravated the family’s suffering.”

December 3

  • Los Angeles Police Department officials said there was no evidence of criminal activity in Kobayashi's disappearance and video showed her crossing the border into Mexico.
  • Los Angeles police classified her as a “voluntary missing person” and say there are no signs of foul play.
  • Kobayashi's family said in a statement that they would not abandon the search and urged authorities and the public to “remain focused on finding her and avoid speculative conclusions.”

  • His family issues a statement saying that Kobayashi was found safe and sound. “We are incredibly relieved and grateful that Hannah has been found safe,” the statement said. “This past month has been an unimaginable trial for our family and we kindly ask for privacy as we take the time to heal and process everything we have been through.”
