The night host says that podcasts have become a better format to interview politicians

The liberal host of the NBC “Late Night”, Seth Meyers, offered a theory on Wednesday about why the era of politicians who interviewed in interview programs is coming to an end.

The digital panorama has quickly changed in the era of social networks, and both politicians and media personalities have noticed. Some have referred to the 2024 elections as the “choice of podcast”, arguing that the podcaster Joe Rogan and others like him changed the course of President Donald Trump by having him in his shows.

Meyers roasted Trump for his political ambitions at a White House correspondent dinner in 2011, a few years before winning the presidency. Now in Trump's second term, 14 years later, Meyers spoke with Variety magazine about how the media panorama has changed.

After the interviewer noticed the trend of politicians who appeared in the podcasts of the comedians, Meyers agreed that they have turned out to be a much better platform for them than television interviews.

“To begin with, we have dismissed politicians as guests, because we had more fun talking about politics than talking to politicians,” Meyers said about his program that he was the then president Joe Biden in February 2024 and then Vice President Kamala Harris in October 2022.

“In fact, I think there is more value in a politician who goes to a podcast and does not feel the hurry for just hitting points of conversation, which could sometimes have in a program like mine,” he added. “I think it is good for politicians and good for voters so that they go to a place where there is more time and less career to hit what their public relations team has created.”

While Meyers argued that the podcasts do not necessarily violate the type of comedy it does, he said they have a key advantage.

“If there is something that the podcasts have affected, it is that you realize that when you are talking to someone for eight minutes, it is very unlikely that you deepen more than a podcast host with them in the course of an hour and a half,” he said. It contrasts with the television interviews, where “you want to move quickly and be fun, because it has to be something different from a podcast interview in a long way.”

The interviewer pointed out a prediction of the veteran host of the Jimmy Kimmel interview program that there might not be night hosts in 10 years, and Meyers said that in fact it may be true.

“Unless a change in the important sea occurs, I do not think there is a completely new wave of hosts of the network, in the way there has been,” Meyers said. “No one understands this business and this format better than Jimmy Kimmel, so when he talks about that, I tend to share his opinion.”

He added even more that podcasts continue to be as great as ever, because people will simply adapt to the best technological format that carries their message.

“Interesting voices will always use the technologies they have at hand to find a audience. So, if you are a great lover of the institution of night interview programs, there is probably some sadness in your future,” he said. “But if you love funny people who tell funny jokes and talk to people interesting, it will always be available.”
