The huge migrant shelter of the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan will close in the coming months, the mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, announced Monday.
The converted installation, which has around 1,000 rooms, has prosecuted more than 173,000 migrants since its opening in May 2023, according to the New York Post.
“While we have not finished taking care of those who came out in our care, today it marks another mile .
According to the reports, he added that the closure, that a source told the post it is expected to occur in June, is due to “the successful strategies that we establish here in New York City and due to the policies we advocate on the border” .

New York City had around 69,000 migrants in its refuge system in January 2024, but that number has currently fallen to less than 45,000, city officials said to the post.
At one point, there were 4,000 migrants who appeared to the Big Apple every week, however, that number has also fallen to an average of 350, added the newspaper, citing Adams.
During the last weeks of the presidency of Joe Biden, around 400-500 new migrants requested help from the city every week, the post also reported.

The Adams office did not immediately respond Monday morning to a request for comments from Fox News Digital.
The anticipated closure of the Roosevelt Hotel shelter, which according to the reports has also been related to gang activity, occurs when New York City has closed other migrant attention sites.
“We will continue to look for more places to consolidate and close, and more opportunities to save taxpayers money, as we continue to successfully manage this response,” Adams said in December when he announced that 25 shelters are closing in the coming months.

The migrants who arrive after the closing of the Roosevelt hotel will have other places in New York City to register, city officials said to the post.
