The layoffs could be blessed in disguise with the right mentality and planning

No economy is immune to layoffs, and with the greatest implementation of artificial intelligence and the unprecedented adjustment of the employment numbers last year, we seem likely to have entered a period in which the RIFs are common. Lufthansa Airlines announced its plan for Cut 4,000 administrative jobs for 2030And Jamie Dimon, the JPMorgan Chase CEO, only said that the world's largest bank will be “fundamentally re -chable” for AI's new era.

These are two of many examples that represent massive and disruptive changes in our economy and our way of life. And while most of us will eventually be affected in one way or another, we do not have to stagger without hope. Whether he has already released or worries about being the next one, the key is to change the way he looks at himself, making the perspective of the transition less terrifying and possibly even liberating.

The main problem for many who lose their job is that they define themselves too limited, limiting their identity to a single role or industry. When the dismissals hit, they feel encased and cannot follow the work beyond their last position. That often leaves them scared, depressed and even victims.

Without denying the challenge of being dismissed, I would encourage employees to cross the process to take a more complete and insightful vision of who they are and what they should do. To do that, they need to see themselves in terms of the unique and transferable gifts that have been given to them, which can be applied to a wide variety of jobs in almost any industry.

One of the best ways I know to identify these gifts is through the idea of ”work genius.” There are six types of work that appear in each job, in each industry:

  • Wonder: Reflect on opportunities for improvement
  • Invention: Invent new ideas
  • Discernment: Evaluation of ideas and solutions
  • Galvanizing – gathering others to act
  • Habilitation: respond to the call to help
  • Tenacity: pushing things to the finish line

The truth is that none of us is good in the six. Each person in any industry has two types of work that give them energy and joy; This is where your work geniuses are.

On the other hand, all have two guys who drain them and that are not doing well. We call those frustrations that work.

The remaining two types of work fall somewhere in the middle, neither particularly energized or drainage. We call those work skills.

Here is a question that everyone who crosses a dismissal should consider: how much more difficult it will be to find a job if you do not understand your geniuses and frustrations, and if you do not realize that these gifts are not linked to a role or industry?

To answer that question, let's consider an example. Let's say he is a computer programmer, and his company decides that AI can do most of his work. If you only look as a programmer, your job search will feel desperate and discouraging because it will compete with an avalanche of other programmers for less positions.

But if you look at your natural and transferable geniuses, everything changes. Let's say your geniuses are invention and tenacity. That means that you enjoy developing novel ideas and then look for solutions diligently until they finish.

While looking for a job, now you can look far beyond programming and even technology, exploring a much broader spectrum of job opportunities that need someone with their geniuses. When doing this, you will realize that there are many roles in a wide variety of industries that need someone like you, and that their prospects for success and job satisfaction will be much higher in a work that fits their talents.

Ironically, it is possible that his previous work did not allow him to use his geniuses. Many people get jobs in the fields that studied at school, and many simply fall into a job by circumstance. But to intentionally follow a career that aligns better with their geniuses can lead them to realize that being fired, however difficult it was, it was exactly what they needed.

Of course, no work is perfect. We must all do things that do not align perfectly with our strengths. But when we spend most of our time working on our geniuses, we find meaning and satisfaction. When we do not, we are trapped.

What we need is a paradigm change, to think exclusively on our role and industry and, instead, focus on our skills given by God. The world needs those gifts. And when I find a job that allows them to use them, you can look back and see the dismissal not as a curse but as a blessing.
