Texas man arrested for allegedly posing as CPS worker to access children

A Texas man is behind bars after being accused of impersonating a Child Protective Services worker to gain access to children, according to deputies.

Gerald Don Miller, 56, has been charged with three counts of impersonating a public official and one count of sexual assault. He is being held in the Hopkins County Jail on $300,000 bail.

The Lamar County Sheriff's Office said it received a report on June 18 about a man posing as a CPS worker after he allegedly told the boy's parents he needed to speak to the child and then “gained access to the child.”

The boy and his parents were able to give detectives a description of the suspect and his vehicle.

The sheriff's office discovered during the investigation that a similar incident occurred in Sulphur Springs, Texas, in November and learned that the description of the suspect and vehicle matched that of the suspect in Lamar County.

On June 25, the Lamar County Sheriff's Office identified Miller as the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest, as well as a search warrant for his home and vehicle.

Upon executing the search warrant, detectives found items in Miller's vehicle that corroborated what the Lamar County victim described. Evidence discovered in Miller's vehicle also allegedly linked him to the incident in Sulphur Springs.

Miller was arrested and transported to the Franklin County Jail.

Officials said it is important to remember that CPS workers carry accredited credentials and will show proof of those credentials before speaking with them.

Anyone who may have had contact with Miller, who claimed to be with Child Protective Services, is urged to contact local law enforcement. Miller is described as a 5-foot-8, 270-pound man with brown and white hair and a white mustache. He may have been carrying a red briefcase with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice logo.
