Santa Ana coach sent sexual text messages to former student, police say

The head coach of a Santa Ana high school has been arrested after being accused of sending inappropriate text messages to a former student, and Santa Ana police said they believe he may have targeted other underage victims.

Aaron Raya, 28, is the head track coach, football coach and substitute teacher at Godinez Middle School, according to a news release from the Santa Ana Police Department.

On Sunday, a mother alerted authorities that her minor daughter received inappropriate text messages from Raya.

Investigators learned that Raya had contacted the girl during the school year to discuss athletic events, but after graduation he allegedly began communicating with her “in a sexual manner and attempted to get to know her,” according to the Santa Ana Police Department. Detectives with the Special Crimes unit learned of two other former Godinez High School students who also allegedly received sexual text messages from Raya, police said.

Police arrested Raya at his home and booked him into Orange County jail on what authorities described as a “sex-related charge.” His bail was set at $100,000.

Anyone with information regarding Raya or the investigation is asked to contact investigators at (714) 245-8346 or [email protected]. Additional tips may be submitted to Orange County Crime Stoppers at (855) TIP-OCCS.
