Russian missiles killed at least seven people and hit a children's hospital in the Ukrainian capital kyiv on Monday, while another attack in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih killed at least 10.
The Russian airstrike targeted five Ukrainian cities with more than 40 missiles of different types, hitting apartment buildings and public infrastructure, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a post on social media.
Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said at least 20 people were killed and around 50 wounded across the country in the attack early Monday. In Kryvyi Rih, 31 people were wounded in addition to the 10 deaths in what the head of the city administration, Oleksandr Vilkul, called a massive missile attack. Local authorities also reported explosions in Ukraine's central Dnipropetrovsk region.
Ukraine seeks to attack Russian targets with Western weapons, Zelenskyy says
At kyiv's Okhmatdyt children's hospital, rescuers were searching for people under the rubble of a partially collapsed wing of the facility, Zelenskyy said, adding that the number of victims was not yet known.
“It is very important that the world does not remain silent about this now and that everyone sees who Russia is and what it is doing,” Zelensky said on social media.
The attack comes on the eve of a three-day NATO summit in Washington that will discuss how to reassure Ukraine of the alliance's unwavering support and offer Ukrainians hope that their country can move beyond Europe's biggest conflict since World War II.
A two-story building of the children's hospital was partially destroyed. In the hospital's main ten-story building, windows and doors were blown out and walls were blackened.
Medical staff and local residents helped remove the rubble while searching for children and health workers who might be trapped underneath. Volunteers formed a line and passed rocks and debris to each other. Smoke was still rising from the building and volunteers and emergency crews worked in protective masks.
It was the heaviest Russian bombardment of kyiv in nearly four months. The daytime strikes included Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, one of Russia’s most advanced weapons, according to the Ukrainian air force. The Kinzhal flies at 10 times the speed of sound, making it difficult to intercept. Buildings across the city were shaken by the explosions. An entire section of a multi-storey residential building in one district of kyiv was destroyed, officials said.
The Kiev city administration reported that debris, presumably from intercepted missiles, had fallen in some areas of the city, causing fires. Thick plumes of smoke rose from several districts of kyiv.
The head of Ukraine's presidential office, Andrii Yermak, said the attack occurred at a time when many people were out on the streets of the city.
