San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies shot and fatally wounded a man who fired at them outside a Rancho Cucamonga shopping center, authorities said.
Officers were called to the mall around 9:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a man armed with a gun standing outside a Vons supermarket, authorities said.
Witnesses said that when officers arrived at the scene, the suspect crossed the street.
Deputies found the suspect, who was armed with a handgun, outside a Walgreens near the intersection of Carnelian and 19th streets, and when they approached him, he shot them, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department announced in a news release.
It's unclear if the suspect was injured during that exchange, but he then ran to a nearby farmers market in Sprouts, authorities said. There, according to the Sheriff's Department, deputies shot him.
The department did not provide many details about where and when he was hit, nor did it say whether the suspect fired toward or from inside the market.
Video from OnScene.TV showed a glass door shattered at Sprouts and a sheriff's deputy being taken away in the back of an ambulance. The Sheriff's Department said the deputy received “a superficial wound” during the shooting and was released from the hospital a short time later.
The suspect was identified as Davonte Sykes, 31, of Los Angeles. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital but later died from his injuries, the Sheriff's Department said.
Investigators believe Sykes was involved in another shooting in Upland about an hour before the Rancho Cucamonga shooting.
The shooting is under investigation.
