Rachel Maddow admits MSNBC hosts started 'stomping and clapping' during Walz's DNC speech

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow said the network's anchors, reporters and commentators applauded and cheered Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz during his speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on Wednesday night.

“I had no idea it was going to be like this,” Maddow said Wednesday night after Walz formally accepted his party's nomination for vice president. “In the room, as far as our little crowd at the MSNBC mothership, everyone got up out of their seats and started stomping their feet and applauding.”

Former football players from Mankato West High School, where Walz once coached, appeared onstage Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention to support him in a moment that was widely shared online.

After Walz finished his speech, Maddow said the moment was electrifying for her and other MSNBC hosts in the room.

“I was probably six feet away from half the football team on this side of the stage,” MSNBC reporter Jacob Soboroff said when Maddow asked him what the energy was like in the DNC event room.

“The intensity of the smiles on their faces made me scream, 'I can't believe I'm standing on this stage right now, in front of the United States of America,'” he said. “It was a truly incredible experience.”

“There's nothing more real, Chris Hayes, than still having your uniform jersey, your jersey from when you won the state championship,” Maddow told MSNBC host Chris Hayes.

“I love that moment,” Hayes said. “You get the call and you say 'yes,'” he said, imagining the players' excitement when the Democratic National Committee asked them to appear alongside their former coach.

Walz also spoke Wednesday about the fertility treatments he and his wife underwent to help them have children.

In another moment that went viral online, Walz's son, Gus, was visibly emotional and applauded his father.

“That's my dad,” Gus Walz seemed to say.

Gus, 17, is Walz's youngest son and is currently a senior at St. Paul Central High in Minnesota.
