It's been more than a decade since Phil Mickelson won the Open Championship. The American golfer traveled to the Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland this week to practice ahead of the 2024 British Open.
However, Mickelson arrived at the important annual tournament wearing a surprising item of clothing: sweatpants. Mickelson was quick to reveal that the fashion choice for the day was actually not entirely his decision.
The 54-year-old golfer appeared complacent after losing a bet. Earlier this week, YouTube golfer Grant Horvat shared a video on his channel of a match between himself and Mickelson.

Under the agreed terms, Mickelson would have had to wear sweatpants at the Open if Horvat won the match.

By contrast, Horvat would have been forced to buy a year's supply of coffee for a fan if the six-time major champion had emerged victorious.
Horvat entered the match with a five-shot lead, which seems to be a common theme in his YouTube-style matches against professional golfers. The video appears to have been filmed on a golf course in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
However, Mickelson appeared to take the loss in stride and even took to social media to poke fun at the situation.
“As a 54 year old unfashionable woman, I never thought I could pull off sweatpants. Guess I was wrong,” Mickelson wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
At one point during the aforementioned YouTube video, Mickelson hinted that he would have a hard time pulling off the look.
“Wow,” he said. “I'm not sure I can pull it off. Were sweatpants designed for 54-year-olds?”
Hovart has also posted videos of himself competing in matches against Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia.
