The map for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles is starting to fill up with confirmed venues for 19 more sports across Southern California.
The LA28 organizing committee's Friday morning announcement includes golf at Riviera Country Club and seven other events along the Figueroa Corridor downtown. Long Beach will have seven sports and Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson will have four.
“We are so proud to bring the Games to so many of our vibrant and diverse communities,” said Janet Evans, LA28’s chief athlete officer, in a statement. “The venues in these cities are world-class.”
The new additions follow news last month that SoFi Stadium and the Intuit Dome, both in Inglewood, will play a major role in 2028. They also address concerns about Los Angeles getting a significant share of Olympic action.
Two weeks ago, city council members complained about the relocation of swimming and basketball competitions to the Inglewood sites.
“I'm going to say it because it's true: we're not having enough events,” said Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez.
Riviera at Pacific Palisades was an obvious choice for golf, having hosted an annual PGA Tour event, the US Open and the PGA Championship.
The Los Angeles Convention Center, next to Crypto.com Arena where the gymnastics events will be held, will host fencing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo and wrestling. Weightlifting will take place at LA Live’s Peacock Theater and badminton will be held a few miles down Figueroa Boulevard at USC’s Galen Center.
More locations within the city limits are expected to be announced in the coming months.
“The city of Los Angeles will host more Olympic sports than any other place,” said Evans, a four-time gold medalist in swimming.
The lineup of activities planned for Long Beach includes triathlon and marathon swimming along the coast, rowing and canoeing at Marine Stadium and handball at Long Beach Arena. Sailing will take place at Belmont Shore and a temporary water polo facility will be built on the convention center grounds.
Long Beach was also part of the 1932 and 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Dignity Health Sports Park, which opened in 2003 as the Home Depot Center and is home to the Galaxy, will be used for rugby. Tennis will be played at the park's 8,000-seat tennis center and cycling will take place on an adjacent velodrome that was used in 1984 and has since been redeveloped.
From the early days of their bid, organisers of LA28 – which will also stage the 2028 Paralympics – have promised to save money by using existing stadiums and arenas.
The Coliseum, a centerpiece of the city's two previous Olympics, will be outfitted with a temporary raised floor to host track and field. Initial plans included judo and wrestling at Pauley Pavilion; the UCLA campus will now be dedicated to an athletes' village with living and training facilities.
“That’s the main reason you send the Games to a place like Los Angeles,” said Victor Matheson, a sports economist at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts. “They have a lot of venues.”
