A 15-year-old Apple Valley boy wielding a gardening tool was shot and killed Saturday by a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy, according to a statement from the department.
The statement says the boy, Ryan Gainer, “chased the officer in an attempt to attack him with the sharp end” of a 5-foot-long garden tool.
The officer had confronted Gainer after being cited for a 911 call Saturday afternoon to a home in the 13400 block of Iroquois Road. The teenager was allegedly assaulting members of his family.
After being shot, “Gainer was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries,” according to a Sheriff's Department statement released Sunday.
Police body camera footage provided to Victor Valley News Group shows an officer approaching the open door of the family home when a young man runs out of the house, with a long object raised, toward the officer.
“Come back, come back or they will shoot you!” the deputy shouts as he quickly backs away. The footage changes to that of a second officer showing the officer backing away, with one arm raised and his gun pointed at Gainer.
The agent who shot the young man was not identified.
The agency said the incident had been handed over to its specialized investigations unit.
