NEWT GINGRICH: A star is born in the vice presidential debate and Trump is vindicated

NEWNow you can listen to Fox News articles!

Tuesday night's vice presidential debate was surprisingly one-sided.

Senator JD Vance was calm, calm, friendly, pleasant and in control of the facts and of himself.

By contrast, Gov. Tim Walz began the debate so nervous it was painful to watch. He then made a series of errors that cumulatively disqualified him. It was hard to believe it was on a national list.

VANCE VS. WALZ DEBATE: MAIN CONCLUSIONS FROM THE CONFRONTATION OF THE VP CANDIDATES

Calista and I went to bed Tuesday night convinced that Senator Vance had won a substantial victory. In that victory, he also vindicated President Donald J. Trump's gamble in selecting a running mate so early in his career. At 40, with only two years in the United States Senate, Vance is only a few months older than Richard Nixon when President Dwight Eisenhower chose him as the Republican vice presidential candidate in 1952. Nixon would remain an important part of the scene politics for 42 years. years. That would give Senator Vance a potential role in American government and politics until 2066.

When I woke up Wednesday morning, virtually every comment validated the feeling that the debate was something extraordinary.

This new reality was best summed up by Mark Halperin in the Broad World News Bulletin:

“1. You can pretend, as most of the mainstream media does, that Tim Walz was not 'beaten' by JD Vance, but, as honest joe klein (fully credited as unsurpassed in contempt by Donald Trump and Vance) told the world that Walz really got beat up, so badly that “it wasn't as bad as Biden's weakening performance in June, but it was close.” Remember: Biden's performance[romance] “It was so bad that it ended his candidacy and his career.”

Pollster Frank Luntz tweeted that his focus group voted 12 to 2 that Vance had won.

Glenn Greenwald posted on

“Everything Walz said treated Vance as a totally normal, reasonable, pleasant colleague.”

New York Times columnist Ross Douthat published: “I would call it the most successful Republican debate of this century, eclipsing Romney in the first debate with Obama in 2012.”

Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume disregarded the performances of moderators Norah O'Donnell and Margaret Brennan, saying they were “disgusting” and making the debate a three-on-one proposition against Vance.

These were just a few. The Trump-Vance campaign did not raise less More than 22 journalists and public figures agreed that Vance defeated Walz.

Donald Trump Jr. was the third big winner in this debate. He had strongly endorsed Senator Vance as his running mate and worked to get him elected by his father. That choice certainly seemed to work brilliantly.

Like Caitlin Doornbos in the The NY Post wrote: Governor Walz's problems began from the beginning.

“Tim Walz had a chance to make a first impression in Tuesday night's vice presidential debate and he blew it on his opponent. JD Vance even had the opportunity to speak.”

His nerves clearly prevented him from meeting the challenge.

Finally, Governor Walz said a couple of things that were just strange.

In a clear moment of confusion, he said he had become “friends with school shooters.” When asked why he had lied about being in Tiananmen Square during the crackdown and murder of student democracy protesters in 1989, Walz ultimately called himself a “fool” for simply saying something that was false. .

Being the “dumb candidate” is not a good way to campaign during the last five weeks before the election.

After last night, Senator Vance is a huge national figure among Republicans and conservatives. It will have much more impact on his campaign than before the debate.

After Tuesday night, most Americans will view Governor Walz as someone who is clearly not prepared to be president or vice president.

Vice President Kamala Harris' comment that she was exhausted and sleepless when she elected him will now seem like a first step in minimizing his role and ability to make decisions under pressure.

A vindicated President Trump will campaign with more enthusiasm and a greater sense of certainty that he has built a winning ticket.

It was a much bigger night than I expected.
