Newsom establishes new funds for homeless, responsibility measures

Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Monday $ 920 million in newly available funds to help local communities clean the camps and combat the lack of housing, as well as new measures that, he said, were destined to ensure that state dollars of the state dollars homeless people spend wisely.

The vast majority of funds, $ 760 million, will be available through the sixth round of the Housing, Assistance and Prevention Program of homeless people of the State and can be spent on permanent and intermediate homes, dissemination services and other efforts.

To access these funds, the Governor's Office said that local municipalities must meet certain requirements, including that they have moved to clean camps, have spent or obliged previous funds and have met the state requirements to plan new homes.

The governor's office also announced a new website that will allow Californians to see the progress made by their counties in the construction of new homes and reduce the lack of housing. It also tracks how much money each state county has received to get people out of the streets.

“As we continue to support our communities to address the lack of housing, we expect rapid results, not excuses,” said Newsom in a press release. “While progress pleases us that many communities have done to address the crisis in the lack of housing, there is more work to do.”

In addition to the $ 760 million in funds that local communities can request, Newsom announced the award of approximately $ 160 million in subsidies that local governments can begin to spend now.

This includes millions for the city of Los Angeles to clean three camps near the I-10 highway, Hollywood Boulevard and the River.

In the future, the governor has proposed to attach more strings to the funds of homeless people, including the ability to “recover” distributed funds when local governments have not progressed enough to resolve the crisis.
