Navy football player discovers his sister won Olympic gold during training

Chreign LaFond didn't get to see her sister win Olympic gold, but she still had the celebration of a lifetime.

LaFond is a defensive end for Navy, while her sister Thea represented the Dominican Republic in the women's triple jump in Paris.

On Saturday, Thea won the event, giving the Caribbean island its first Olympic medal, let alone gold.

Chreign was practicing while Thea was competing, but head coach Brian Newberry broke the news.

“Hey, your sister just won a gold medal,” Newberry said.

He was then harassed by the rest of his teammates.

Thea also won the event at the World Indoor Championships last March, so it was hers to beat.

“It's an understatement to say it's a big deal,” Thea said after her victory to give the Dominican Republic a long-awaited medal. “Sometimes you wonder if being from a small country means you have less access to resources… But we've put a lot of emphasis on quality and just execution.”

Thea, 30, was born in the Dominican Republic but came to the U.S. at the age of 5. Her younger brother was born in the United States and attended Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C. The Paris Games marked her third Olympics.

Thea was actually a dancer before taking up athletics as a teenager as her parents could no longer afford dance classes.

On her second attempt, she jumped 15.02 seconds, earning her the winning jump. Jamaica's Shanieka Ricketts took silver in 14.87 seconds and USA's Jasmine Moore took bronze in 14.67 seconds.
