Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi denies allegations that she made phone calls to orchestrate the Democratic coup that ultimately forced President Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.
Pelosi was pressed about her role in the pressure campaign in an interview Saturday with CBS.
“No, I was not the leader of any pressure. [campaign]”Pelosi told CBS. “Let me say things I didn't do: I didn't call any person. I didn't call any person. I could always say to you, 'I never called anybody.'”
“He knows I love him very much,” she said, declining to speak further on the subject.
PELOSI IGNORES BIDEN'S DECISION TO STAY IN RACE IN LATEST SIGN OF DEMOCRATIC FRACTURE
Panic spread through the Democratic Party after Biden’s disastrous performance in a debate against former President Trump in June. What followed was a steady stream of leaks from within the party criticizing the former president’s age and mental acuity, as well as lawmakers outright calling for his removal.
During that time, top Democrats remained publicly aligned with Biden, though they often said he had a tough choice to make.
Biden's interviewers shed light on his behind-the-scenes frailty: 'It's impossible not to notice'
“It's up to the president to decide whether he's going to run or not,” Pelosi told MSNBC at the time. “We're all encouraging him to make that decision because time is running out. I think the overwhelming support of the caucus is not for me to say. I'm no longer the caucus leader, but he's liked, he's respected, and people want him to make that decision. Not me.”
PELOSI IS 'CONVINCED BIDEN WILL LOSE' AND IS WORKING THE PHONES IN HOPES OF 'GETTING OFF THE BULLETIN,' REPORT SAYS
Several top Democrats were reported to be moving against Biden at the time, including former President Barack Obama.
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy claimed Pelosi and Obama together were responsible for “pulling the strings” behind the effort to oust Biden.
Pelosi also spoke directly to Biden at the time, bluntly informing him that polls showed he was losing to Trump and spelling disaster for House Democrats.
Biden responded by firing back, telling her he's seen polls that indicate she can win, a source told CNN.

Another source described Biden as becoming defensive about the polls and that at one point Pelosi asked Mike Donilon, a longtime Biden adviser, to reach out to her about the data.
A spokesman for Pelosi's office declined to comment on the conversation at the time.
