The prosecutors and defense lawyers presented final arguments today in the bribery trial of Nadine Menéndez, wife of former Senator Bob Menéndez, DM.J., accused of helping the agreements of runners who sold the influence of the senator in exchange for gold bars, cash envelopes and a Mercedes-Benz Convertible.
The former senator, who was not present and was sentenced in a separate trial to 11 years in prison on bribery, acting as a foreign agent and obstruction charges, repeatedly referenced during the sum of the government. Nadine Menéndez, who faces similar charges, sat in silence in the courtroom between her two lawyers, with a pink mask.
Prosecutor Paul Monteleoni pronounced the final argument of the government for several hours, qualifying Bob Menéndez in the “fellow of the crime” of Bob Menéndez. He walked through the jury through the 18 charges against Nadine Menéndez, claiming that she acted as a corridor, selling her husband's political power in a series of schemes.

Barry Coburn, which represents the defense, argued that the government had applied too broad definitions of “official acts” and “quid pro quo”. He said that most of what was alleged involved a political behavior of routine. “Menéndez must and should not be convicted of any of them,” Coburn told the jury.
Specifically delayed the claim that a meeting between former Senator Menéndez and New Jersey Attorney Gurbir Grewal, ascended to an official act.
“These things are not tested in this case,” Coburn said, added: “The rule of law demands the acquittal of those positions.”

The defense also questioned the credibility of José Uribe, a cooperative witness of the government, who said that much of his testimony lacked corroboration. Coburn pointed out a dinner in which Uribe said that the former senator said: “I saved your butt, not one but twice.” Coburn argued that such statements were not verified and unreliable.
