MSNBC host Joy Reid said Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly would have been a safer choice than Gov. Tim Walz as Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate because he's as white as a “mayonnaise sandwich on Wonder Bread.”
Reid, a far-left face of the network's political coverage who is known for her racially provocative comments, took to TikTok to offer her candid thoughts on Walz's choice of Harris over Kelly and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.
“It's not the choice I was expecting her to make. It came down to the final three, as we understand it, and I thought she would pick astronaut. Realistically, to me he would have been the safest choice, the most conventionally safe,” Reid said of Kelly.
“White, super white. Like a mayonnaise sandwich on Wonder White bread. Coming from a border state, he could have made a strong argument for his border management. His wife, Gabby Giffords, who was a victim of gun violence, is very empathetic,” he continued. “He's an astronaut, I mean, what's cooler than an astronaut?”
HARRIS' SNUBBING OF SHAPIRO MAKES LIBERAL HOLLYWOOD JEWS FEEL 'UNWELCOME' AMONG DEMOCRATS: REPORT
Walz and Shapiro, like Kelly, are white. Reid did not explain what makes Kelly “super” white.
Reid later noted that Shapiro would have been the “riskier choice.”
“It would have angered a lot of groups, from educators who oppose his positions on vouchers to environmentalists who would have been angered by his pro-fracking positions and, of course, pro-Palestinian protesters,” Reid said.
“I think Shapiro would have been the one who would have provoked the most anger because he would have diverted the whole conversation to Gaza and the campus protests. That would have been like the center of attention.”
COMIC MICHAEL RAPAPORT SAYS HARRIS LOST HIS VOTE FOR ISRAEL: 'I CAN'T SUPPORT A PARTY THAT'S IN FAVOR OF THIS NONSENSE…'
Reid said Shapiro's presence on the ticket would have “reduced a lot of the momentum” Harris has gained since replacing President Biden.
Shapiro, who is Jewish, came under fire earlier this week after a pro-Israel op-ed he wrote more than 30 years ago resurfaced and rankled the anti-Israel portion of the Democratic base.
CNN's Van Jones asked whether Shapiro was denied the nomination because of “anti-Jewish bigots” in the party, and other media figures have suggested Shapiro was not selected because he is Jewish. Democrats have countered that key party figures such as Harris' husband, Douglas Emhoff, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., are Jewish.
