Meet Sunny and Gizmo, the new residents of Eagle Calva de Big Bear

Friends of Big Bear Valley has announced the names of the two newest bald eagles of the mountain: Sunny and Gizmo.

The Eaglets hatched in early March and are descendants of the famous couple of Eagle Calva de Big Bear, Jackie and Shadow.

Friends of Big Bear Valley revealed the names on Tuesday afternoon through a Facebook publication.

After a name contest that received more than 54,000 tickets, the list was reduced to 30. The students of the Bear elementary school voted from the selected list for winning names.

“Meet Sunny and Gizmo,” said the non -profit organization in the Facebook publication. “After the wonderful but long process of selecting names for the adorable Jackie and Shadow chicks, Bigger Chick is now called Sunny and Motherly Chick now called Gizmo.”

The group will contact the winners of the contest next week and receive a recognition certificate. There were multiple winners, since the names were presented by different people.

Although there was a third eagle that hatched with Sunny and Gizmo, his name was not part of the contest. Baby Eagle did not survive a snowstorm last month. That Eaglet was appointed Misty by Friends of Big Bear Valley in honor of Kathi Misterly, a dedicated volunteer who lost his life to cancer, the organization said.
