Man with shotgun fires at sheriff's helicopter from rooftop


Authorities have identified the man who was shot and killed by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies Thursday night after he reportedly fired at one of the agency's helicopters from a rooftop in South Los Angels.

Thursday, officers were called to a call about a man possibly under the influence and armed with a shotgun in a yard in the 14600 block of Cahita Avenue in an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County near of Compton that was patrolled by police. Department.

When they arrived, the man left the backyard and climbed onto the roof of a home, the Sheriff's Department said in a statement, noting that the man continued to ignore orders to surrender.

Authorities said a sheriff's helicopter that also responded informed deputies at the scene that the man was armed and later said he had fired shots in their direction. According to a news release from the department, officers ordered the man to drop his gun “several times” before the shooting occurred.

Two officers on the ground then shot and killed the man, the department said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. City News Service, citing the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner, reported that the man was Jerman Magana, 30, of Compton.

Authorities have not released the names of the officers who opened fire.

The shooting is being investigated by multiple agencies, which is standard protocol.

No one else was injured.
