Man shot and killed by Downey police after allegedly setting off fireworks

A man was fatally shot Saturday by Downey police after he reportedly set off fireworks in his backyard, authorities said.

The Downey Police Department said it was responding to a “disturbance” call at Stewart and Gray Road around 6:15 p.m. ABC7-TELEVISION reported that the man had gotten into an argument with his neighbor after setting off fireworks in his backyard.

The police statement said the man died at the scene and that no officers were injured. The statement did not mention whether any weapons were found at the scene.

Police said the California Department of Justice is leading the investigation into the shooting. The Department of Justice normally investigate Police shootings when the victim did not have a weapon.

The state Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
