Louisiana sailor stranded for two days saved by Coast Guard and local officials


A team of law enforcement officers saved the life of a boater after he was stranded in Louisiana waters for two days.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced the rescue on Facebook on Tuesday. The incident took place on May 22, authorities said.

“The boater, who had left on May 20, became disoriented, ran out of gas, and his phone battery died, leading to the incident,” the Facebook post explains.

Agencies involved in the rescue included the LDFW, several sheriff's offices, the Vermilion Parish Constable's Office and the United States Coast Guard. Authorities used boats, helicopters and planes to locate the wayward sailor.

“LDWF, SPSO, IPSO and VPSO teams searched by boat, the US Coast Guard deployed a helicopter and plane, and the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office explored the area by vehicle,” the Facebook post explains. .

“At 8:30 a.m., the United States Coast Guard detected a ship stranded in Southwest Pass.”

In coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office and LDWF officials finally rescued the boater on May 22.

“The Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office arrived safely to the individual in a pickup truck and then the U.S. Coast Guard airlifted him back to the Quintana Pier,” the statement added. The navigator was rescued without injuries.
