Los Angeles high school students walk out over alleged anti-Semitism

Students at El Camino Real Charter High School in Woodland Hills held a walkout Tuesday to protest recent anti-Semitic incidents on campus.

The action, which was organized by a group of seniors, included students holding Israeli flags and signs reading: “Stop the hate.”

Danielle Eshed, a ninth-grade student at the charter school within the Los Angeles Unified School District, told KTLA-TV Channel 5 that a classmate yelled anti-Semitic comments at her and then attacked her.

“He called me a dirty Jew and then I said something in defense,” Danielle told the station. “She said she was going to beat me up and I didn't believe her until she got up, pushed me and started hitting me repeatedly on the neck and back.”

David Hussey, the school's executive director, told KABC-TV Channel 7 that the student has been disciplined but did not provide further details.

“One is to address the problems. Maybe some students don't know what they're saying and what the impacts are, so it's about educating those students and then reassuring other students that they are safe in this school,” Hussey said.

Hussey did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday morning.

Danielle's father also spoke at Tuesday's rally in support of his daughter, according to KCBS-TV Channel 2.

“The school believes he has more protection rights than my daughter,” Edan Eshed said. “He has the right to be educated, but my daughter [doesn’t] “We have the rights for their safety.”

Students also said notes about Hitler have been passed around in class and that the World War II curriculum is insensitive, according to KTLA.
