DC aircraft accident researchers recover the black boxes of American Airlines after collision in the air
On Wednesday night, 64 people were aboard a regional plane from American Airlines entering the Reagan National Airport from Wichita, Kansas, when the plane crashed with a black hawk helicopter from the army that transported three soldiers, sending both Potomac aircraft and without leaving survivors.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
Search teams are still recovering bodies, and both planes remain on the Potomac River until they can withdraw in a rescue operation.
The accident is the first commercial airline accident on American soil since 2009, when 50 people were killed when a plane bounded to Buffalo, New York, stopped after takeoff.
The king also offered condolences in December for the victims of a plane crash of December 29 in South Korea that killed 179 people.
“My wife and I were deeply saddened upon learning of the horrible plane crash in Muan, which resulted in such a serious loss of lives,” he said at that time. “As the people of the Republic of Korea cry this disaster, families and loved ones of all victims are in our prayers.”

The royal family is no stranger to tragedy. Princess Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris in 1997, and Lord Louis Mountbatten, the second cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth, was killed in a terrorist bombing of the Irish Republican Army in Ireland in Ireland in 1979.
The late uncle of the Queen, Prince George, the Duke of Kent, also died in a plane crash in 1942 while visiting troops in Iceland. And his first cousin, Prince William, the Duke of Gloucester, died in 1972 while driving a plane in a race during an air show in Staffordshire, England.
The royal family is often in the air, flying to remote places, and Prince Philip and King Carlos learned to fly in the army. Prince William and Prince Harry were also a helicopter pilots in the army.
