Kamala Harris remains a fill-in-the-blanks candidate, even after all the “joy” that came with the Democratic National Convention. Is this her high point?

Did the Democratic National Convention intentionally spread rumors of a surprise performance by Beyoncé at its Thursday night gathering in order to fill the auditorium? If so, it was a cheap stunt, and it says a lot about its confidence in Kamala Harris’ star power. But that’s hardly a surprise; after all, this is the same team that won’t let its candidate speak off-script, for fear she’ll say something idiotic.

That can't last. Starting this star-studded evening, the Democratic candidate will have to fill in the blanks. So we may have just witnessed the climax of Kamala Harris's presidential campaign.

Harris accepted her party’s nomination to run for the Oval Office with a well-delivered speech that was met with great enthusiasm (even without Beyoncé), but she answered few questions about how she might actually govern our country.

KAMALA HARRIS FORMALLY ACCEPTS DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION IN NATIONAL VOTE CAMPAIGN

This has a purpose. When the vice president unveiled proposals earlier this month to introduce price controls on food and hand out tens of thousands of dollars to first-time homebuyers, her policies were widely criticized. Her approval ratings, which had been rising since her unlikely nomination without a vote, immediately fell.

Since then, and especially in his speech on Thursday night, he has uttered clichés and nonsense. To be fair, he did a pretty good job of it.

His campaign is in many ways a rehash of Barack Obama's 2008 “hope and change” campaign, filled with optimistic and unsubstantial generalizations. But Obama campaigned after eight years of Republican George W. Bush in the Oval Office; voters were tired of the Iraq war, tired of divisive politics and hungry for a new direction.

For four days, Democrats have given the impression that Harris is facing an incumbent candidate, when in fact she is the incumbent candidate.

Kamala Harris talks about forging a “new path forward,” but she’s been in the White House for three and a half years digging the same holes she now promises to fill. When Harris complains that the price of bread or meat has gone up 50% and that housing is unaffordable, that’s something under her watch.

For four days, Democrats have made it look like Harris is running against an incumbent; in reality, she… is the headline.

In her acceptance speech, Harris, like other speakers before her, defended the Democrats' perceived vulnerabilities. She spoke of her love for her country and her pride in the values that make America exceptional, such as freedom, opportunity and justice.

HARRIS AND WALZ ENJOYED A SUCCESSFUL CONVENTION, BUT FAILED TO ACHIEVE A CRITICAL GOAL

Never before have there been so many American flags waving at a Democratic convention center; never before has the assembled crowd had such difficulty remembering the words to our national anthem or so joyously chanted “USA, USA!” Clearly, Harris and the DNC wanted voters — and especially those living in patriotic Midwestern battleground states — to ignore how progressive left-wing Democrats routinely attack America as a hotbed of racism and sexism, castigate capitalism as the root of egregious inequality, and protest our evil alliance with Israel.

Harris also went out of her way to applaud our law enforcement agencies, eager to erase memories of Democrats’ movement to “defund the police” or support for bail “reform” changes that have made our cities more dangerous and police officers more vulnerable. She spoke of her experience as a tough-on-crime prosecutor, hoping people would forget her support for the thugs who burned much of Minneapolis in 2020. She also made a point of supporting and honoring veterans, perhaps to calm fury among our nation’s soldiers that her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, has exaggerated his military rank.

TRUMP CRITICIZES HARRIS AS PART OF THE SOCIAL STORM FOR THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT SHE “DID NOT MENTION” IN HER SPEECH AT THE CND

Perhaps Harris has learned a thing or two from Gov. Walz, who for many years was the defensive coordinator of a high school football team. After all, many say that a good defense is the best offense. For example, Harris promised that as president she would sign the bipartisan border bill that she says former President Trump sabotaged for political purposes. That accusation helps counter critics who accuse Harris, Joe Biden’s border czar, of doing absolutely nothing to stop the flood of migrants entering our country illegally.

Harris spoke engagingly about her background as the daughter of a determined Indian mother who taught her anything was possible, and how she grew up in a middle-class community. For a woman who has struggled to keep staff and has been described as difficult, Harris likely burnished her image and likeability.

But the shine soon faded as she launched over-the-top and dishonest attacks on former President Donald Trump. She complained about the January 6 protests, accusing Trump of trying to “throw away your vote.” Of course, Democrats did exactly that by nominating Harris, ignoring the 31 million people who voted for Joe Biden.

He warned that Trump would “jail journalists,” deploy the military against our own citizens and ban abortions nationwide. He invoked, like many others, the specter of Project 2025, though even liberal news organizations have confirmed that the conservative policy document has nothing to do with Trump’s campaign.

Like President Joe Biden, Kamala Harris continually lies about former President Donald Trump; if he really is as terrible as they claim, surely they can use real facts to prove their case.

There is another essential falsehood that has circulated throughout the Democratic convention. Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and nearly everyone in between have talked about how they would unite the country and how hate, to quote the president, should have “no safe harbor” in our nation. Yet the vitriol expressed toward Trump, and by implication toward the tens of millions of people who support him, reveals the hypocrisy of such sentiments.

Harris’ speech was a delirium for Democrats, who are overjoyed that Joe Biden is no longer their nominee, but their work is just beginning. Outside of that Chicago stage, voters want to know what impact Harris’s promised $5 trillion tax hike will have on the economy, how unprecedented federal spending could keep interest rates high, and how unlimited immigration could drive down middle-class wages.

Harris will have to answer some questions soon. After that, the joy may fade.
