Jennifer Garner took some time off from the gym to reprise her role as Elektra in the new film “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
On Monday, Garner took to Instagram to explain that she was in shape two decades ago when she filmed “Elektra,” but that level of fitness wasn't enough for a Marvel movie.
In the video, Garner, 52, was shown performing difficult exercises that helped her get in shape for her action-packed cameo. The actress recalled the moment Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy approached her with the idea of reprising her role for the third “Deadpool” film.

“We were on the set of 'The Adam Project' and they looked at each other with that look they have to communicate an idea, 20 pages of dialogue, nuclear codes… there's some crazy artistic destiny between those two,” Garner wrote in her post.
“Aside from trying to convince my kids' preschool friends that I was secretly a ninja, I hadn't picked up Elektra sais since 2004 – I was in shape, but not in Marvel shape,” she continued.
“I was in shape, but not in shape for Marvel.”
Garner explained that she incorporated swimming, weightlifting, boxing, running, trampolining and balance exercises to prepare for Elektra's return.

“I didn't know Elektra and I needed an ending, but Shawn and Ryan did. They have so many gifts, but seeing and uplifting the people around them is at the top of the list,” Garner continued. “Shauna and I were in heaven on set with them, with my longtime friend @thehughjackman, @dafnekeen, @channingtatum, @realwesleysnipes. Filming the fight was so much fun, being there all together, it really was a dream.”
The actress concluded: “I'm proud of my friends and grateful to be up there with them. Thank you is not enough, guys, but it's a good time until I figure out what makes it.”
Garner first played the role of Elektra in the 2003 film, “Daredevil,” alongside her ex-husband, Ben Affleck. In 2005, she landed her own film.
