Italian legislators fight in parliament: video

Video captured a wild fight breaking out in Italy's parliament that reportedly forced a lawmaker to leave the chamber in a wheelchair.

The incident occurred Wednesday during a vote on a controversial government bill to give greater autonomy to Italy's regions, according to Politico. He reported that it began when Leonardo Donno, of the Five Star Movement party, which opposes the reform, threw an Italian flag in the face of Roberto Calderoli, Minister of Regional Affairs and Autonomies.

Footage then shows two parliamentary secretaries in the Chamber of Deputies trying to separate the pair before other lawmakers joined the fray, one of them throwing punches at Donno.

“Among the various kicks, I also received a very hard punch in the sternum and I collapsed because I couldn't breathe,” Donno told local media as quoted by Politico.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani later told Sky TG24 after the fight that “I have no words.”

“We need to set another example, not blows to solve political problems,” he said. “It's not boasting, it's not shouting, it's ideas that have to be explained well to persuade voters.”
